Petra Kvitova and Tomas Berdych won the Hyundai Hopman Cup title for Czech Republic after recording a 2-0 triumph over France in Saturday’s final at the Burswood Dome in Perth.
Kvitova opened the tie with a 75 61 win against Marion Bartoli before Berdych sealed victory by defeating Richard Gasquet 76(0) 64. The two Czech players, ranked No. 2 and No. 7 in the world respectively, remained unbeaten in singles play throughout the tournament.
“It’s really good to win at the beginning of the season and of course I have to say thank you to Tomas because without him we wouldn’t win,” said Kvitova.
Berdych added: “It couldn’t be better, it was an extremely great week and first of all I need to congratulate my partner. She won all she can and I just add some winnings again and now we can be standing here and have such a nice trophy, so it was a really good week.”
Czech Republic’s only previous Hopman Cup success was in 1994 when Jana Novotna and Petr Korda teamed up to defeat Germany’s Anke Huber and Bernd Karbacher in the final.
