I had had a lot of trouble with Time-Warner cable as a provider a few years ago. A friend of mine suggested that I switch to Dish Network. I decided to give his suggestion a try. I changed to Dish Network in July 2007 and one of the first channels I saw was the Tennis Channel. I knew nothing about tennis but I was instantly captivated by what I saw on the screen. The commentators said it was Roger Federer playing at Wimbledon.
Strange as it may seem, I did not know who Roger Federer was, nor did I know anything about the game of tennis, but somehow I felt so enraptured by Roger’s style and grace when he played that I decided to continue watching. I watched well into the night and the next night and every night after that until on the last Sunday of the tournament, I saw Roger win his 5th Wimbledon title amidst all the pomp and circumstance of the place. It was an awe-inspiring moment for me.
Since I didn’t know much about tennis, watching Tennis Channel every night was very instructive for me. I tried to learn all the terms that the commentators used and even took notes so I could research them after the game was over. I searched the internet for the rules of tennis and read a bit of the history of tennis as well. I read articles about Roger and tennis so I can better understand what I’m watching. Thus began my journey into the world of tennis and especially that of Roger Federer.
From that first moment in July 2007 until now, I have been following every tournament that Roger has played and used my DVR to great advantage so I can see him play over and over again, especially when he wins, so I can relive the excitement and inspiration I felt. I love what John McEnroe said about Roger. He said Roger is the Baryshnikov of tennis. I can’t agree more.
