Samantha Stosur hopes to rescue the start of her season after crashing out in her home event in Queensland with an early loss at the Brisbane International. Now the reigning US Open winner will pull up her socks and work for an improvement in Sydney, her final competitive chance before the January 16 start of the Australian Open.
The No. 6 lost to Czech Iveta Benesova in the second round and hopes to learn from the setback.
“I didn’t play the way I know I can, and that I need to play,” said the Aussie, “I always want to give credit to an opponent. She did play well but I certainly didn’t feel like I did what I was capable of.”
But there is always the next event: “Hopefully, everyone will see it as a bit of a bad day and I’ll bounce back next week and the week after and that I’ll play a lot better and keep getting better. I don’t want to dwell on it. I want to go into next week feeling like I can play better and then the next week after that, even better again.”
The top of the women’s game remains open, with Caroline Wozniacki still without a major title as Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova is pressing hard in the rankings while at the same time not eager to talk about a possible takeover of the top spot.
According to WTA calculations, if the Czech were to win the pre-Australian Open event in Sydney, she would seize the top spot from the Dane.
