Canadian Milos Raonic started his 20112 season in Chennai, his game bolstered by a breakthrough season in 2011 and hopes for even bigger success going forward. “I have such confidence in my game that I stick to the things that I do best,” said the
Montenegro-born 21-year-old ranked 31st. “That helps me get out of the tight moments.
“I’ve learned to accept things, to try to find a way to win. Every match you play, even if you’re not playing your best, if you’re playing the next match, you’re in the tournament. A lot of things came together, learning more about myself, trying to stay calm and collected.”
Raonic has been guided along the way by former Spanish player Galo Blanco. As a result, the Canadian has a training base in his mentor’s hometown of Barcelona and has a solid support setup in Spain.
The young talent is searching for a second ATP title after earning his first last year in San Jose, then losing the next week’s final in Memphis to Spain’s Fernando Verdasco.
“I worked on a lot of things but a big part of it was maturity,” said Raonic of his 2011.
“From a mental standpoint, it was just learning about my game, learning to think what I needed to do for my game to be effective. I now have the shots and the patterns I believe in the most when the pressure mounts.”
