After disappointing Auckland by not re-upping for 2012 and then pulling from Brisbane due to an ankle injury. Maria Sharapova may actually be third time lucky if she heals in time to play the minor WTA event in Hobart from January 8.
The Moorilla International which starts a week before the Australian Open could find itself with its biggest name ever in the field. Reports indicate that the major champion’s handlers are working to see about her becoming a late entry.
Sharapova, 24, was all set to debut in Brisbane before her ankle problem, one which dates back to the autumn and which forced her off court in Asia. The US-based Russian won two titles in 2011, both of them at the elite Masters level in Rome and Cincinnati.
