Lleyton Hewitt is determined to do everything possible to play a full 2012 season despite the chronic toe injury which continues to hang over the game of the soon-to-be 31-year-old. Hewitt will make a start at the weekend at the Hopman Cup in Perth when he plays for Australia in the eight-nation mixed team competition.
The two-time Grand Slam winner has not set foot on an ATP court since a September Davis Cup loss by Australia against Switzerland. Doctors who have been treating him for months for the foot problem cannot believe that the noted battler is still keen to get back into the game.
The No. 186 has been given a wild card for the Australian Open, the event he cherishes more than any other and one he has never won. “This year’s been frustrating with the foot injury,” Hewitt told Australian media. “The rest of my body feels great, so that’s probably even more frustrating.
“If I can get over this foot injury, I feel great at the moment in terms of my ball striking. It’s as good as it’s been in a long time. As long as my foot holds up, I’ll keep going.” He is also playing without pain killers to combat upset stomach.
Hewitt will partner Jarmila Gajdosova, with the team facing Spain (Fernando Verdasco and Anabel Medina Garrigues) in the New Year’s Day tie at the Burswood Dome.
