Roger Federer begins the 2012 season in less than four days, setting in motion his fourteenth season as a professional tennis player. Federer began playing tennis at age 8, and his love for the sport has never ceased. With the love of anything a vast crevasse lies between being in love and loving. At his highest point as a professional, Federer was undoubtedly in love with tennis, but now as his relationship with the game grows rocky Federer’s true love for tennis must come through to bring him back where belongs.

Growing up with Idols like Boris Becker and Pete Sampras—men who vowed themselves to tennis much like Federer has, it’s reasonable why Federer became the great player he is today. Winning no less than three titles a year for the last 10 years, and a record 16 Grand Slam titles birthed Federer’s love for tennis into legacy.

Federer has stated he does not plan on retiring anytime soon. Some speculators insist he should end his career on a high note, reasoning their logic with the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games and the fact that he is currently No.3, but love is illogical. While love is the beam that supports Federer’s tower of accomplishments, ambition undoubtedly buttresses it. Ambition and love fuel Federer’s need for the illusive Olympic singles gold, the desire to beat Sampras’ record weeks at No.1, and years at No.1—Federer’s final goals.

For Federer to become the greatest tennis player ever, he needs to fill the fissure between being in love with tennis and loving tennis, bridging the best of both sides, bringing the best out of Federer. Federer is already considered the best ever by many, but in 2012 Federer could make his legend untouchable by winning the Career Super Slam (all four Grand Slams, the Olympic singles gold medal, and the ATP World Tour finals), gaining the No.1 spot for a minimum of two more weeks, and finishing the year as No.1.

On January 1st Federer begins his path from living legend to living myth at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, in Doha, Qatar. Federer is the only tennis player to win the Qatar ExxonMobil Open three times with a potential fourth. In 2011 Federer defeated the defending champion Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4. Federer may potentially face Nadal and/or Tsonga in the upcoming tournament. Within the next several days Federer and Federer fans alike will discover if he can begin 2012 as powerfully as he finished 2011.
