He is at an age when most players would have long since retired, and now Germany’s Rainer Schuettler has announced that the 2012 season will be his last.

The highest point of his career was as long ago as 2003, when he reached the final of the Australian Open before losing to Andre Agassi. It was also the year that he won his last ATP Tour title, in Lyon.

“There is no fixed date for retirement or a decision on which will be my last tournament,” said the 35-year old, presently ranked 132. “(But) by 2013 I certainly will not be a professional player.”
