The Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) has claimed another victim, handing teenaged Swedish player Lucas Renard a six-month suspension and a $5,000 fine after the world no. 822 pleaded guilty to an anti-corruption offence.
Renard, aged 19 and a veteran of just 40 matches on the third tier Futures circuit, was found to have “contrived or attempted to contrive the outcome or any other aspect of an event”.
In handing out the punishment, the TIU announced the ban was reduced by four months on condition that Stockholm-based Renard attends anti-corruption education training.
Renard last played competitively in this month’s Futures event in Antalya, Turkey where he won through three matches of qualifying before losing to Monaco’s Jean-Rene Lisnard. His best results came at Falun (Sweden) in October and Delhi four months earlier when he reached the quarter finals of Futures events.
On his own website www.lucasrenard.com, he insists: “I’m a guy who appreciates fair play.”
There appears to be no suggestion of an appeal and the suspension takes immediate effect.
