Roger Federer has finished his family holidays and is back in Dubai in desert heat sweating through the preparations for what he hopes will be a 2012 continuation of his end-of-season form burst which took him to three titles in as many events.
The Swiss 30-year-old climbed back to the No. 3 position, overhauling Andy Murray, but has his eye on more progress in the coming months. “I had a wonderful end of the season by winning 17 matches in a row,” he said in an online fan interview.
“I had a great season. Sure, I had some tough losses but I found a way to bounce back and now be in a good position for 2012.”
The 16-time major champion is suddenly back in the conversation for another Australian Open title, which would boost his ATP chase in a big way. He missed out on title honors at the majors in 2011, which only exploded into prominence with his late finishing sprint in Basel, Paris and London.
As usual, Federer was not one to panic even as he entered the autumn with just one trophy to his name in 2011.
“When things aren’t going my way I try to see the big picture. Hold my ground,” he said. “I prove to myself that I can do it. It is all part of being well prepared, so that you don’t panic in a situation like this.”
2012 is lining up as a huge year, with goals which include a London Olympic singles gold medal, another major success and a return to a Davis Cup first round (against the US in Switzerland).
