The coach of Roger Federer has confirmed that the concept of a Federer-Martina Hingis Swiss Olympic dream team has died a death.
“Martina and Roger talked together and decided that they will not compete in mixed doubles,” Federer mentor and Swiss Davis Cup coach Severin Luthi told local press.
The idea had always been long-odds, with neither potential participant all that keen to discuss the possibility of the two best Swiss players in history teaming up on court for London, 2012.
The topic had been hot for a half year – but with both Hingis and Federer somewhat cool. Hingis, 31, who retired for a second time in 2007 rather than fight a positive test for cocaine of which she said she was innocent, would have had to jump through numerous bureaucratic hoops – including a return under the international drug-testing umbrella – to have even been allowed on court at the Games.
Federer continually said that he had not actually spoken to Hingis about the idea. The Swiss world No. 3 has plenty to concentrate on in 2012, including an Olympic doubles title defense with Stanislas Wawrinka.
