Australian teenaged hope Bernard Tomic is ignoring everything but his tennis as the 19-year-old vows to try and crack the ATP Top 10 in 2012 by the time he turns 20 next October. That’s a big task for the No. 42, whose main achievement so far was a surprise Wimbledon quarter-final last summer.
Tomic is also shaking off the controversy generated this month as he was investigated by Queensland police for speeding on the road in his powerful BWM M3 while still holding a provisional driving permit.
“I don’t worry about that stuff. It is in the past,” he told Australian media in the run-up to his 2012 start at the Brisbane ATP event on January 1. “You are going to get good press and bad press … but I am doing my job playing tennis.”
“I would love to be in the top 10 by my next birthday. I have a lot of tournaments where I can get points in the next six months.”
Tomic stood 158th when he made his move at Wimbledon and made slow but steady improvement during the second half of the 2011 season by reaching a Tokyo quarter-final in October.
“There is a little bit more pressure on me, but I have always had pressure from a young age – I know how to handle it.”
