Ticket sales sparked when the world No. 3 announced that – good to his word – he would play. The decision almost certainly means that he will not participate in the Dubai ATP event later in February, though that decision has not yet been officially taken.
“I’m delighted to play, especially with the strong support that awaits us at home “, said Federer in a statement. “We had a great year (Switzerland returned to the World Group) and the atmosphere and team spirit is excellent. ”
Federer will head a team comprising which is to include \and others to be chosen by captain Severin Luethi, also a coach of Federer.
Federer played his first Davis Cup tie in 1999 at age 17 and will be competing in a first-round for the first time since 2004 as he plays in his 21st career tie. The US team remains uncertain, with no official word from Andy Roddick as to his 2012 participation.
