The dates for the 2012 Bank of the West Classic are now set. The oldest women’s-only professional tennis event in the world will be held July 9-15 at the Taube Family Tennis Center on the campus of Stanford University.
The 2012 Bank of the West Classic will mark the 42nd edition of the tournament which was first held in San Francisco in 1971.
The tournament’s storied history has included many of the sport’s greatest players holding the championship trophy including Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Andrea Jaeger, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams.
In 2011 Serena Williams defeated Marion Bartoli 7-5, 6-1 to claim her first Bank of the West Classic singles title.
The Bank of the West Classic, a WTA Premier event, features a 28-player singles draw as well as a 16-team doubles draw. The event is owned and operated by IMG and serves as the opening women’s event of the Olympus US Open Series.
