–that at the age of 31, Belgium’s Xavier Malisse has announced his retirement from Davis Cup competition and said the time is right for younger players to take responsibility.

–that a memorial service was held yesterday at Wimbledon for Air Chief Marshal Sir Brian Burnett, chairman of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in the 1970s. All the great and the good of tennis were there.

–that Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone will play doubles together during the first half of 2012 in an attempt to qualify to represent Italy in the London Olympics. Schiavone now rarely plays doubles, but Pennetta has recently enjoyed a very successful partnerships with Argentina’s Gisela Dulko.

–that Tennis Canada will announce that Rebecca Marino (Vancouver) has been named 2011 Most Outstanding Female Player. The 20-year-old’s impressive season featured many career milestones, including reaching her first WTA final, advancing to the third round at the French Open, and hitting a high of No. 38 on the WTA rankings in July.
