Samantha Stosur will play the Australian Open next month for the first time as a serious contender four months after making her major breakthrough with a US Open title.
The WTA No. 6 who claimed an Aussie tennis award this week in a blue-carpet ceremony is shrugging off expectations from the public which have only gotten more intense since she beat Serena Williams for the New York crown.
Stosur has a long way to go in Melbourne after stalling at the fourth-round stage at home. “I don’t think there’s any greater pressure than probably playing Grand Slam finals,” the 27-year-old Queenslander told Aussie media. “I’m lucky enough to have played two of those now and got through the last one with flying colors.
“There’s no reason why I cannot get a good result at the Aussie Open. It’s nothing to do with the court, or the conditions or anything like that – it’s just been one of those things.”
Stosur will bank on her solid performances in Paris (2010 final) and New York when she starts again in next month in the major.
