Just a matter of hours after captaining Argentina in the Davis Cup final against Spain in Seville, Tito Vazquez found himself sacked from the post.
Now reports from Argentina suggest Martin Jaite, a former coach to David Nalbandian and tournament director of the Buenos Aires event on the ATP World Tour, currently titled the Copa Claro and played in February, will take over the post for next year’s first round tie in Germany.
Jaite represented Argentina in Davis Cup throughout a 15 year span after making his debut in 1984. He recorded a 14-20 record, including 11-7 at singles on clay. His career peaked when registered a place in the world’s top ten in July 1990 and he won 12 career titles, his best Grand Slam showing a quarter final at the 1985 French Open.
The Argentina Tennis Federation opted against renewing the three year contract of Vasquez after his team fell 3-1 to the Spanish despite a spirited showing that saw Juan Martin Del Potro extend both Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer to five sets and the doubles team of David Nalbandian and Eduardo Schwank winning in straight sets.
Vasquez has been in charge since succeeding Alberto Mancini following the 2008 Davis Cup final where a disjointed Argentine team lost on home soil in Mar Del Plata to Spain who were without the services of an injured Nadal.
Admitting his prime job was to revitalize team unity, Vasquez went on to record a 6/3 winning while filling the captain’s chair.
