Having not played for much of 2011 due to injury and illness, Venus Williams appears to be ready to make up her lack of match play in 2012.
She has agreed to play in the modest International Series $220,000 Malaysian Open, which takes place between February 27th and March 4th at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort in Kuala Lumpur. She joins current world number nine Marion Bartoli, defending champion Jelena Dokic and Asian Games gold medalist Peng Shuai.
Williams played just four tournaments and 11 matches in 2011, suffering a hip injury during the Australian Open which kept her away from the game until Eastbourne, and then defaulting her second round match at the US Open and revealing that she was suffering from Sjogren’s syndrome which can cause fatigue and pain in the joints.
That cannot be cured but she has controlled it by changing her diet to mainly vegetarian, and after having taken part in a short series of exhibition matches with her sister Serena she is set to return to competition in Auckland at the beginning of January.
