Roger Federer could well put some of the $1.6 in prize money he won for an undefeated championship at the World Tour Finals into the $17.5 million chalet complex he is having built in the Swiss Alps.
The 30-year-old and wife Mirka are involved in a massive project – the construction of two luxury chalets in Valbella, eastern Switzerland. Photos in the Swiss press show several sets of cranes and the shells of two large homes already visible on an alpine hillside.
Swiss media report that neither of the homes – one for the Federer family, the other for his parents Robert and Lynette – will feature all mod cons. The project in the mountains of Graubünden is built on a massive block of land measuring more than 8,000 square meters overlooking the lake of the ski resort of Lenzerheide. The real estate alone is reported to have costs $11 million, Federer, who grew up in western Basel, has always been attracted to the Alps, though his skiing is rather limited so as not to provoke injury which could damage his world-beating career.
The three-storey chalets built in classic alpine style feature a 125 square meter living and dining room – that alone is the size of a large flat.
Also in the plans: a home theatre, a recreation room with bar, billiards, a wine cellar, a fitness and wellness centre with steam bath and garage space for nine cars.
The master bedroom upstairs is said to be the size of a small flat at 67 square meters with an 18-metre dressing room and a bathroom twice that large. There should be plenty of room for the Federer twins to play.
The two homes will be linked, with plans already in place to grow a privacy shield of trees around the sprawling property.
