Fans were expected to arrive in record numbers for the weekend Davis Cup final in Seville as Spain face Argentina, with the estimated 27,000-plus crowd poised to set a new mark for tennis.
ITF boss Francesco Ricci Bitti confirmed the high-water mark to dpa, the German news agency, calling the expected attendance for the weekend clay-court spectacular’s new milestone.”
“We achieved a new milestone: more than 27,500 spectators will attend each day of the battle. This improvement is at least 300 spectators, (beating) the record set in 2004 in Seville,” added the Italian, referring to the final seven years ago in the city against the US.
That tie set a record of 27,200 packing the stands at the Olympic stadium.
With demand heating up due to the appearance of Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer on the side, officials managed to put aside 6,000 extra seats with “limited” views, which were also snapped up by the public.
