Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had a bad day on Sunday, both at home in Switzerland and at the “office” in London where he lost the World Tour Finals to Roger Federer. But the nearly $750,000 he won as London finalist might go some way to easing the shock of having his house burglarized.
The break-in took place on Sunday afternoon as the Frenchman was facing Federer for the year-end title. Swiss media reported that an alert neighbor noticed suspicious circumstances at Tsonga’s 200 square meter villa in the village of Gingins halfway between Geneva and Lausanne just above the lake.
Reports indicate that the home’s alarm system failed to work, allowing the robbers to work undisturbed. On Monday morning, the full extent of the break-in was realized when a door was found to have been broken open by a neighbor who told police he saw a light on in the home at 4 a.m. but no sign of Tsonga’s Audi car.
Tsonga took it all in his stride: “I hope I recognize my house on the way home”, he told L’Equipe of the home where he’s lived on his own for two and a half years.
Police are still investigating to see if the break-in was tied to Tsonga’s tennis fame (and known whereabouts on finals day) or was just a chance incident.
