The addition of No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki to the field at the Sydney International means that the January pre-Australian Open event will feature three of the to- six women on the WTA.
Joining the Dane at Olympic Park will be current Grand Slam champion Samantha Stosur of Australia, the US open winner, and China’s Roland Garros champion Li Na. Also playing: 2008 French Open winner Ana Ivanovic of Serbia.
It will be the fourth consecutive year that Wozniacki has played, with the Dane hoping to kick-start her Open campaign. “It’s ideal preparation for the first Grand Slam of the year,” she said in a statement,
“I always enjoying going to Sydney every year. The matches there are always so tough because so many of the top players compete there so I know I will get the practise I need before Melbourne.”
Wozniacki lost the 2009 quarter-finals against Serena Williams.
Wozniacki is coming off another successful season at the top of the WTA rankings but still carrying her cross of never having won a major title. She took trophies in 2011 at Dubai, Indian Wells, Charleston, Brussels, Copenhagen and New Haven, reaching semi-finals at the Australian and US Opens.
