Rafael Nadal has tried to tone down the alarm bells which began ringing the moment he said he was missing his “passion for the game” after his disappointing showing at last week’s ATP World Tour Finals.
With the Davis Cup final with Argentina starting this weekend, the Spaniard had to do a quick repair job, saying that his words in London were taken the wrong way. Nadal quickly rolled back on his original statement, adding after a training session on clay in Seville that he’ is still the same battling colossus he always has been.
After explaining that his words re exaggerated, the world No. 2 added: “This has been a tough season for me. I’m not lacking passion, what I’m suffering is weariness from many years of playing at this level, week after week.
“But it’s important to work at 100 percent each day to try and win this Davis Cup.”
Spain is the modern masters of the competition, with four titles in the past decade. Opponents Argentina has lost three finals.
Nadal is expected to lead his nation, along with London semi-finalist David Ferrer, also tapped out after the draining season.
Argentine should field Juan Del Potro and David Nalbandian in singles in front of up to 20,000 Spaniards.
