David Ferrer has a reputation on court as a terrier, chasing down every ball that comes his way and dominating form the baseline. But even the scampering Spaniard admits that another long ATP season has left him short of breath.
The losing semi-finalist 7-5, 6-3 to Roger Federer in London at the World Tour Finals said that he must somehow find the strength to carry on one more week as Spain play the Davis Cup final against Argentina in Seville.
“All the players know the season is very long, is very tough for us,” said the No. 5. “We play a lot of tournaments, Davis Cup, ATP tournaments. We finish in December.
“Now I will play to Davis Cup. In December I have only one week to rest and I come back in January to play in the new season.”
Bottom line: “We know that and we want to change. We know is not easy, but we need to change the calendar.”
Ferrer had to stress that his fighting reputation aside, he truly does need a pause. “I am tired. I am tired, sure. I’m very tired. I want to stop, but I can’t because I have the Davis Cup. But I’m really tired.”
