Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez and USA’s Mackenzie Soldan both secured qualification slots for the wheelchair tennis event at the London 2012 Paralympic Games after winning the men’s singles and women’s singles titles at the Parapanam Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Top seed Fernandez defeated defending champion Jon Rydberg (USA) 6-4 6-2 and 2007 Parapanam Games silver medalist Robinson Mendez (CHI) on his way to an all-Argentinean final, where he overcame Augustin Ledesma 6-2
6-2 to claim the gold medal. Former world number one Stephen Welch (USA) secured the bronze medal after defeating Mendez 6-0 6-3.
Soldan fought back from a set down to claim the gold medal from compatriot Emmy Kaiser 1-6 6-4 6-4, while Angelica Bernal (COL) clinched the bronze medal in the women’s singles following a 6-4 6-2 victory over Francisca Mardones (CHI).
Rydberg and Welch defeated Fernandez and Ledesma 6-2 6-3 to win the men’s doubles and help the United States to the top of the medal table, while Kaiser and Soldan defeated Bernal and Johana Martinez (COL) 6-3 6-0 to take the women’s doubles gold medal. For more information visit
