Davis Cup World Group newcomer Canada is already taking shots at upcoming opponent France, with the new boys set to host the European power next February in Vancouver.

The presentation of the tie out west in Canada went somewhat below the belt, out of character with decorum at the century-old international team event.

The French stand joint-third on the all-time list of champions having won the title nine times, most recently in 2001. It also owns seven finalist positions. Hockey centre Canada is well down the food chain winning a best showing of World Group first rounds in 1991, 1992 and 2004.

Nevertheless, the Canadians are already talking up their chances at home and making the point with a pair of in-your-face publicity posters for the February 10-12 clash.

One features Canada’s big-hitting Milos Raonic tagged: ‘Hey France, I’ve got a 151 m.p.h. serve. Try returning that with a baguette.’ Another had Vasek Pospisil: ‘Hey France, Welcome to Vancouver. My hometown and your worst nightmare.”

The visitors are likely laughing off the New World arrogance, with everything set to be proven on the court. Canada only announced the venue at the last possible moment due to the impossibility of dislodging hockey from arenas around the snow-bound country in February.

The venue will seat a mere 4,500, most of which are expected to be locals.
