Congratulations, Mardy!! You are in!!

You heard it here first.  Fish has qualified for London’s ATP Finals, whether or not he wins against Monaco today.  Tsonga, too!  The ATP dropped the ball again in failing to properly release the updated standings.  They have a long breakdown on their site that ignores last year’s points for Bercy have to come off.

Coming into this week you had Berdych at 6 with 2940 points, but 90 points were coming off from last year at Paris.  Having earned 90 so far this week, he is still at 2940 points, but now in 8th.

Tsonga was at 7 with 2935 points, but he had no points for Paris last year.  Having earned 90 so far, he is in 6th at 3025 points regardless of what he does tomorrow with Seppi.

Fish was at 8 with 2875 points, but he also had no points for Paris last year.  That means he is now in 7th with 2965 points.

Almagro and Del Potro are now out of the picture.

Tipsarevic was in 11th place with 2305, but also had no points for Bercy/Paris last year.  Reaching the final (600 pts) would not be enough to get him past the top 8, but winning (1000 pts) would get him to at least 7th place at 3305 because he would have dealt with Fish and Berdych along the way, if Fish advanced. He is playing Berdych tomorrow.  That would knock Berdych to 9th behind Fish who already has more points than Berdych with them both having reached the round of 16.

No one else can break into the top 8, although the alternate position could be up for grabs.  Simon is out now and Soderling is done for this year.  Even if Monfils had won the tournament, he would not have been close to catching the top 8 because he had 600 points coming off as last year’s finalist.  Even Roddick with 180 points for last year’s Paris/Bercy event, could only get to 2670 points if he wins the event this week.

It’s sad that the ATP stats department is having such a hard time figuring out these scenarios.  I knew that all math I did at Harvey Mudd would come in handy someday.  The ATP should hire me to do these scenarios for them.  And I need the work!!

But congrats to Mardy Fish and Jo Wilfred Tsonga.  They have already qualified for London 2011.
