Tournament Featuring National 40 and Over Hard Court Championships is Scheduled for Nov. 28 to Dec. 4
The deadline to enter the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National 40 and over Hard Court Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is Sunday, November 13, 2011.
The USTA National tournament, which will feature men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles divisions for players ages 40 and over, will take place November 28 through December 4.
The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club will also be hosting USTA National Father & Son and Grandfather & Grandson Hard Court Championships on Friday, Dec. 2 through Sunday, Dec. 4.
The National 40 and over Hard Court Championships, as well as the National Father & Son and Grandfather & Grandson events, are open to USTA members. Players can register for the tournament online at: http://tennislink.usta.com/tournaments/playerregistration/registerplayer.aspx?T=95071
“It’s going to be an incredible week of tennis later this month as many of the top players from around the country in the 40 and over division will be coming to La Jolla to compete for the title,” said Bill Kellogg, tournament director. “I encourage all players who are looking for some great competition in the 40 and over age group, particularly local players here in Southern California, to enter before Sunday’s deadline.”
In last year’s event at the LJB&TC, former ATP touring professional Jeff Tarango captured the Men’s 40 and over singles championship, while Gretchen Magers, a former WTA touring professional and current San Diego resident, won the Women’s 40 and over singles title. Both have entered again this year, as has Peter Smith, former tournament champion and current head coach of the USC Men’s Tennis team.
Named “Club of the Year” for 2011 by the San Diego District Tennis Association, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is designated one of the “Top 25 Tennis Resorts” by Tennis Resorts Online. In addition to hosting the USTA National Men’s & Women’s 40 & Over Hard Courts, the USTA National Father & Son Hard Court Championships and the Grandfather & Grandson Hard Court Championships, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club also hosts the USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships in May.
The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club has also been home to the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championships since 1942. The Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship is one of the five-oldest tennis events in the world and has a rich tournament history. First held in 1890 at The Hotel Del Monte in Monterey , California , the event was created to promote the sale of real estate on the Monterey peninsula. The original concept pitted the best players from the East versus those from the West. This coast to coast rivalry was the inspiration for the Davis Cup. Past winners of the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship include Jack Kramer, Ted Schroeder, Bobby Riggs, Pancho Segura, Don Budge, Tony Trabert, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Arthur Ashe, Dennis Ralston, John McEnroe, and many other world-class champions. This last March, Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher of Stanford teamed to capture the 2011 Championship.
The Club also hosted the 2008 Fed Cup, and was also the proud host of the 2006 Davis Cup First Round Tie between the United States and Romania.
