The nonprofit Stadium Arts Alliance in New York wants to redesign the historic West Side Stadium in Forest Hills and convert it into a space for tennis, concerts, art shows and possibly even for minor league hockey.
The stadium hosted the U.S. Open from 1915 to 1977, but has crumbled into to disrepair. Last year, a private developer offered to buy it and convert it into luxury condominiums, but the proposal was rejected.
The non-profit group will try and team with the West Side tennis Club to get the proposal passed, but it won’t be easy. Other private developers are said to be waiting in the wings with housing projects on their minds. Last year, the club rejected a $10 million deal to sell the stadium to a developer.
Plans for the venue would replace its bench seating with more spacious, accommodations and scale back capacity to about 9,700.
The City Council appears opposed to hosting rock concerts at the facility again and neighbors were constantly complaining about nose levels
