Former Roland Garros champion Anastasia Myskina says that watching tennis now sends her to sleep, most of the time.
The one-time world number two lifted the French Open trophy in 2004 after defeating Elena Dementieva in the first all-Russian final at a major, and retired after playing her last match there in 2007. She is now a mother of two boys with another child expected in March.
“When I watch the girls live in Fed Cup, I think it’s really nice memories,” she said in Moscow, where Russia are playing the Czech Republic in the Fed Cup final this weekend. “When I watch tennis on TV I go to sleep. But Fed Cup is great memories and I think it would be nice to step on court, but when Fed Cup finishes I think it’s fine. I like my life.”
Myskina, who once posed naked on a horse, Lady Godiva-style, went from the challenge of winning matches to the challenge of being a mother.
Neither role has been easy.
“Being a mum is tough – you understand what’s good for you and the babies, while tennis is just a game, it’s fun because you have a different life when you step on the court. But when the baby is sick you go crazy. When I lost a match it was really bad time, (but) now I know it was a great time. So, being a mum is tougher.”
