Former World No. 17 Sam Querrey upset the number two seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga yesterday 7-6 (5) 6-2 at the Valencia Open 500. Querrey has slipped in the rankings over the last year and is currently ranked No. 116.
2010 was a very successful year for the American who was the titlist in Memphis, Belgrade, Queens and Los Angeles. With six career singles titles to his name this big serving American can do damage to any player in the draw. If Tsonga won today’s match he would have taken over the No. 6 spot in the YTD race from Tomas Berdych. Tsonga is a contender for the last remaining spots for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.
Querrey will come up against another big server Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarterfinals. Del Potro is finding form again and had a win over South African Kevin Anderson 6-4 6-4.
Juan Carlos Ferrero toughed out a three set win over Alex Bogomlov Jr. 7-6 (3) 4-6 6-2. The former world number one spent almost three hours on court in Valencia on Thursday. Ferrero won the Valencia trophy in 199 and 2003. He is now meeting with Juan Monaco who sailed into the quarterfinals with a win over Italian Fabio Fognini 6-3 6-1.
Marcel Granollers got the better of the St. Petersburg Open Champion Marin Cilic. The Spaniard came through 3-6 6-3 7-5. The World No. 34 won the Gstaad Open trophy this year. He now goes on to play World No. 14 Frenchman Gael Monfils for a spot in the semi-finals.
Marcelo Mel and Bruno Soares marched into the semi-finals yesterday defeating the number four seeds Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq 0-6 6-4 10-8. The Brazilian team is currently at No. 11 in the race for London. They will now face the winner of the Bryan twins and Frantisek Cermak and Filip Polasek who are one spot ahead on the YTD rankings.
