Kvitova caps breakthrough year, American veterans re-conquer year-ender in doubles

The Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova beat Victoria Azarenka in a marathon final at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships, 75 46 63, a match that had the No.2 ranking and one of the biggest titles of the year on the line. Kvitova is the third player ever to win the year-ender on her debut, following Serena Williams (2001) and Maria Sharapova (2004). She is now also very close to Caroline Wozniacki on the rankings – just 115 points – although she will have to wait until 2012 to make a push for the top spot.

Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond beat Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik for the dou- bles title. Huber had won twice before with Cara Black; Raymond had won once with Ren- nae Stubbs and twice with Samantha Stosur.

Wozniacki & Huber head into off-season on top

Caroline Wozniacki spends her 55th week at No.1 in singles. Her first 18 weeks there came between October 11, 2010 and February 13, 2011, and after Kim Clijsters spent a week there, she is now in her second stint (this is her 37th straight week there).

Liezel Huber had 134 weeks at No.1 from November 12, 2007 to June 6, 2010 and 13 more from August 2 to October 31, 2010. She returned there on September 12, 2011. This is week No.155
