Nicholas Monroe, a 2004 University of North Carolina alumnus and native of Olathe, Kan., won the bronze medal in men’s doubles this past Saturday at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Monroe teamed with fellow American Greg Oullette to win third place in the doubles competition.
“Representing the United States in the Pan American Games was an unbelievable experience,” Monroe said. “It was a tremendous opportunity and honor to be around all the other athletes, both those I was competing against in tennis as well as making friendships with American athletes in other sports.
“The tennis facility in Guadalajara was state of the art. It has only been open a year and was a great venue in which to compete,” he added.
Monroe and Oullette, a 2008 University of Florida graduate, came in as the tournament’s number 4 seeded team. In the round of 16 the American tandem defeated Mauricio Echazu and Ivan Miranda of Peru 6-3, 6-4. They then advanced to the semifinals with a walkover win over Marcelo Arevalo and Rafael Arevalo of El Salvador.
In the semifinals, Monroe and Oulette faced top-seeded Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah of Colombia and dropped a heartbreaker in back-to-back tiebreakers, 7-6 (4), 7-7 (7).
That placed Monroe and Oullette in the bronze medal match on Saturday where they defeated Darian King and Hayden Lewis of Barbados by a score of 6-7 (9), 6-2, 10-7.
After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Monroe and Oullette dominated the second set, throwing the deciding match in a super tiebreaker which the Americans claimed 10-7.
“The bronze medal match was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had in my tennis career,” Monroe said. “Playing with my teammate, trying to earn a medal for the United States and accomplishing that feat showed us that our hard work had paid off. Having competed in a team oriented event like this representing the U.S. certainly makes me want to have the chance to do something like this again.”
