Australian Ashley Fisher has retired from the ATP Tour. Fisher made the announcement after losing first round at the China Open in Beijing.
Fisher turned Pro in 1998. In 2000 he played in his first Grand Slam tournament, which was the Australian Open. That same year he won his first Challenger doubles title with fellow Aussie Tim Crichton. In 2003 Fisher and partner Devin Bowen won Amersfoort, it was Fisher’s first ATP title.
Born in New South Wales Fisher was the Australian number one ranked junior in table tennis at the age of 11. His best tennis result as a junior was when he reached the quarterfinals of the Junior Australian Open in 1993 partnering Ben Ellwood.
In 1994 – 1998 Fisher attended the Texan Christian University in Fort Worth where he gained a degree in Finance.
During his time on the Tour Fisher has won four doubles titles the latest was in 2008 in Indianapolis with Tripp Phillips. Fisher said the Indianapolis title was the highlight of his career because he won it with one of his best friends as a partner. He reached a career high ranking of 19, which was in 2009. His total career prize money is $850 000.
Ashley Fisher and wife Kirsten are now proud parents of son Holden. Fisher told the ATP WorldTour.com he had planned to finish his career in 2011. The main reasons for his retirement are his knee problems and being away from his family.
