Australian Bernard Tomic receives wildcard into Stockholm
18-year-old Australian Bernard Tomic replaced Argentinian David Nalbandian as a wildcard holder at the If Stockholm Open starting on Monday. The former world number three Nalbandian didn’t require a wildcard when Robin Soderling pulled out due to illness. The Argentines ranking helped him to gain a spot in the main draw.
Bernard Tomic is one of the young and upcoming bright stars on the ATP Tour. He is yet to win a career title but the first title will probably happen in the next six months.
The World No. 49 had an amazing run at this year’s Wimbledon when he qualified and reached the quarterfinals. Along the way Tomic defeated Nikolay Davydenko, Igor Andreev, Robin Soderling and Xavier Malisse before losing to Novak Djokovic.
This week at the Shanghai Rolex Masters Tomic defeated World No. 8 Mardy Fish in the second round in three sets before losing to Alexandr Dolgopolov.
Tournament Director Thomas Johansson said, “Bernard is one of the young players who has popped up this year. It feels great to be able to give one of our wildcards to one of the most promising young player on ATP Tour.”
