Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France is in the quarterfinals at the China Open after a win over Chinese wildcard Ze Zhang 6-3 6-4.
Ze Zhang is ranked No. 389 and he took out fellow Chinese wildcard player Zhe Li in the first round. Tsonga was finished with Zhang in one hour and 17 minutes today. The Frenchman produced eight aces in today’s encounter. Tsonga is just inside the cut off for the end of year Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. Winning today will further his chances to be a part of this prestigious event.
Juan Carlos Ferrero is next up for Tsonga. The Spaniard defeated fellow Spaniard Marcel Granollers 6-4 6-4. The former world number one has suffered some injuries this year but he came back and won the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart earlier in the year.
“Marcel is a very good friend of mine, so it’s always not nice to beat him or another player. His style to me is good. I like to play against him. I feel very good every time I come to Asia. I know I have a lot of fans here supporting me all the time, so for me it’s amazing to come here very far away from home and feel like at home,” Ferrero said.
Ferrero knows the quarterfinals against Tsonga will be tough, “I think Jo is a good player. He’s in good shape. He’s been playing very well for most of the season on the hard courts, and of course he’s one of the favourites to win the tournament. But it’s going to be a nice match for me.”
Big serving South African Kevin Anderson won in two tiebreak sets over Albert Montanes of Spain. Anderson faces Croat Marin Cilic who overcame Italy’s Fabio Fognini 6-2 6-7 (1) 6-3. The number two seed in the bottom half of the draw Gael Monfils pulled out with knee soreness and was replaced by Greg Zemlja who fell against Fognini in the first round.
The very American team of Bob and Mike Bryan cruised into the semi-finals with an easy win over Tomas Berdych and Florian Mayer 6-0 6-3. The World Number Ones are looking to win their 7th title of the year this week.
The Bryans sets up a clash with the No. 3 seeds Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic who came through in straight sets against Marcel Granollers and Oliver Marach.
In the other semi-final Ivan Ljubicic and partner Marin Cilic will face Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau. The Croats had a surprise win over the No. 4 seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes 6-2 6-3. Tecau and Lindstedt are two times finalist at Wimbledon had a great win over the No. 2 seeds Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor 7-6 (6) 2-6 10-6.
Lindstedt and Tecau is hoping to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals later this year. Only two teams have already qualified for the event, The Bryans and Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor.
