RAONIC FALLS TO NADAL IN TOKYO

Montreal, October 6, 2011 – For the second consecutive year, Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) took on Rafael Nadal at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships, an ATP World Tour 500 event played in Tokyo, Japan. Last year the Canadian was defeated 6-4, 6-4 by the Spaniard who was particularly impressed by Raonic’s serve after their first meeting.

This week, Raonic was playing his first ATP tournament since suffering a hip injury at Wimbledon. After defeating Japanese wildcard Yuichi Sugita in the opening round, he faced a much stiffer test against the World No. 2 in round two. In the end, i twas Nadal who came away with a 7-5, 6-3 victory, losing just 11 points on serve in the match and maintaining 77 percent first serve percentage. In defeat, Raonic served 8 aces, but was unable to save both of the break points he faced in the 90 minute contest. For his part, Nadal hopes to continue his run to a second straight title in Tokyo when he takes on Santiago Giraldo of Colombia in the quarter-finals.

Raonic will continue his comeback next week in China at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.
