No.2 Ivo Karlovic(CRO) looked on the verge of being upset in the first round at the 3rd Annual RelyAid Natomas Racquet Club Challenger before coming back from 4-1 down in the third set tie-breaker to pull out a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(8) win over Martin Fischer(AUT).

The Americans had a good day asNo.1 James Blake(USA) defeated Amir(BIH), 6-4,7-5 in the featured afternoon match while No. 3 Sam Querry, had a bit of a scare against Laurynas Grigelis(LTU), winning 6-4,6-7(2), 6-2. Wild card, Jack Sock, thrilled a center crowd with his power and finesse as he took out No.8 James Ward(GBR), 6-3, 7-6(3).

Other seeds who made it through the first round were, Izak Van Der Merwe(RSA) who had a straight win over qualifier, Blake Strode(USA), 6-3,6-4 and Bjorn Phau(GER), who easily dispatched Robert Farah(COL), 6-1,6-4.
