World No. 4 Andy Murray won his third title of the year today when he crushed American Donald Young 6-2 6-0 in the final of the PTT Thailand Open in Bangkok.
Murray won the AEGON Championships at the Queen’s Club just before Wimbledon (d.Tsonga) and more recently he won the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati (d. Djokovic). Today’s title brings his tally up to 19 career titles. The British No. 1 won his first ATP Tour title in Bangkok in 2005 when he was 18-years-old.
Andy Murray’s goal this year is to finish in the Top Three. “In terms of the way I’m playing it’s very good to get off to a start like that on this stretch and hopefully I can continue that through Shanghai. It’s a very good start Roger always plays very well on the European indoor courts, so I’m sure going to have to win a lot more matches if I want to finish No. 3. That’s the goal and I’ll keep working hard to give myself a shot at doing that.”
The Brit has already qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London at the end of the year. Murray who suffered a surprise loss to Young in Indian Wells earlier in the year knew he had to play well today. “Towards the end of the first set he started to play a nit better, but once I got up in the second I hardly made any mistakes. Felt like I was moving well, so it was difficult for him to hit any clean winners.”
Donald Young will be inside Top 50 for the first time in his career when the rankings come out on Monday. “He played well. I couldn’t do much and it showed in the score. It was great play from him. It was my first final on the ATP World Tour,” Young said. He added, “It was definitely great to win four matches and I’m into the Top 50 which is great for me, it was one of my goals at the start of the year. I just hope I can build on that and have some more tournaments like this.”
Being today’s winner Murray will receive US$ 107 000 prize money and 250 ATP Tour ranking points. Murray will now play Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo. He will face Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus in the first round.
Top seeds Oliver Marach of Austria and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan claimed the doubles title today. They defeated Michael Kohlmann and Alexander Waske of Germany in two tiebreak sets.
“It’s very, very exciting. It’s my third career title. I was playing for the first time with Oliver and I’m really happy to be in Thailand and win the title. The target at the end of the year is to make the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals and I think it’s good preparation. I’m looking forward to playing with Rohan Bopanna again next week,” Qureshi said.
