Tennis has been spoilt for choice as far as multiple grand slam winners, especially recently with Djokovic, Nadal and Federer.
So, who are the most notable One Slam Winners in recent history? Like a great movie without a sequel, these players leave you scratching your head wondering how they didn’t win more…
Goran Invaniseic
Won his fairytale 2001 Wimbledon crown as a wildcard having been ranked 125 in the world. He beat Pat Rafter in one of Wimbledon’s most memorable finals. Prior to this he was runner-up in three Wimbledon finals, to Agassi in 1992 and Sampras in 1994 and 1998.
Gabriela Sabatini
The Argentinean won her maiden U.S. Open in 1990. One of the most popular players in tour history beat her nemesis Steffi Graf in the final, whom she played forty times during her career winning eleven.
Thomas Muster
This former Austrian World number one won the 1995 French Open beating Chang. He has notable semi-final appearances in Australia but famously avoided Wimbledon for the majority of his career. The grunting lefty announced recently he will re-retire later this October.
Michael Chang
Won his French Open Crown on his second appearance at the tender age of seventeen. He made three other slam finals failing out to Thomas Muster in the 1995 French Open final, 1996 Australian Open to Boris Becker and U.S. Open to Pete Sampras of the same year. He finished his career with thirty four career titles and still performs on the Champions Tour.
Jana Novotná
By the time she secured her 1998 Wimbledon victory from Nathalie Tauziat of France, most pundits had given up on the serve and volley specialist, having lost in three previous grand slam finals. Novotná retired a year later having also collected twelve grand slam doubles titles.
Pat Cash
The charismatic Australian with the chequered head band won his lone grand slam title in 1987. He beat Ivan Lendl as the number eleven seed. He lost two five set finals at the Australian Open, in 1987 to Edberg and 1988 to Wilander. Cash is also a draw favourite on the Champions Tour.
