Final Facts
– Radwanska wins her second Premier-level title of the season and the sixth WTA singles title of her career. Earlier this summer the 22-year-old also defeated Zvonareva in the final of the Mercury Insurance Open at Carlsbad; that title was her first since winning at Eastbourne, another Premier event, in 2008.
– Radwanska is now 6-2 in WTA finals, having also won at Stockholm in 2007 and Pattaya City and Istanbul in 2008.
– Radwanska has won her last three meetings with Zvonareva in straight sets, having also prevailed in the third round at Toronto in August. She now leads their head-to-head 3-2.
– Radwanska is projected to rise to No.12 on Monday’s new rankings.
– Zvonareva didn’t lose a set to reach what was the 30th WTA final of her career. The 27-year-old Russian leaves Tokyo with a 12-18 career record in WTA finals.
– Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond win their third title of the season, after Toronto and the US Open. Having teamed up for the first time at Charleston earlier this year they are now 3-2 in WTA finals as a unit.
– Tokyo marked Huber’s 80th career doubles final; she improves to 47-33 with the win. Raymond is now 73-38 in doubles finals.
– In Tokyo, Huber was enjoying her 150th non-consecutive week as doubles world No.1. She will stay there on Monday’s rankings, while Raymond, who has spent a total of 117 weeks at No.1 during her career, is projected to rise from No.6 to No.4.
– Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta, both also recent doubles No.1s, were contesting their second final of 2011. They won the Australian Open in January.
Final Quotes
Agnieszka Radwanska, 2011 Toray Pan Pacific Open singles champion:
“I was a little bit nervous at the start, but I woke up after those first two games. I had some tough matches this week – and I was playing without a bye, so I had a lot of matches in a row – but I just kept trying my best. It was the finals so I tried not to think about it and fight until the end. I’m very, very happy to win this tournament. All of the top players were playing here, and I played some good tennis to beat them.”
Vera Zvonareva, 2011 Toray Pan Pacific Open singles runner-up:
“I think given everything that has gone on here in Japan, the players have a responsibility to support the people and the tournament. I hope the spectators enjoyed the match, even though it wasn’t a great one for me. I hope to continue to support the victims of the tsunami and earthquake.”
Liezel Huber, 2011 Toray Pan Pacific doubles champion:
“Tokyo is really one of my favorite tournaments. Especially now, after what has happened in Japan, I felt like I owed it to the tournament to come and play – and once again the tournament has been great back to me. To win a title here is so special.”
Lisa Raymond, 2011 Toray Pan Pacific Open doubles champion:
“It feels great to continue the run from New York and to build on that. Every time we step on the court our goal is to win matches and titles. Hopefully we can keep it up for the rest of the year.”
