British number one Andy Murray is through to the quarterfinals of the PTT Thailand Open in Bangkok after winning comfortably 6-4 6-2 against Michael Berrer of Germany.
The world number four is back playing after reaching the semi-final of the US Open where he lost to Rafael Nadal. He also played and won two singles rubbers in Davis Cup when Great Britain took on Hungary at home.
Of today’s match Murray said, “I served well throughout. I am still trying to overcome the jetlag a little bit, as I find it difficult travelling east.” Murray will now face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals. The 20-year-old spoiled Italian qualifier Simone Bolelli’s day by winning 7-5 (8) 6-1.
Japanese qualifier Go Soeda has set up a clash with Donald Young in the next round after winning against Germany’s Tobias Kamke 6-2 7-6 (7). US Open success story Donald Young toughed out a three set win over last year’s Thailand Open Champion Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1 6-7 (0) 7-5. “I feel good to have got a win like that. I held my nerve because I missed chances to break in the second set,” Young said.
Second seed Frenchman Gael Monfils was in trouble today against Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo but turned the match around and will now face Finn Jarkko Nieminen in the quarterfinals.
Monfils was faced with six break points in the three set match that finished 6-4 4-6 6-1 in two hours. “I expected a tough match. Even after I lost the second set, I felt I was moving better and hitting my groundstrokes well, so I was positive that I could do well in the third set,” Monfils said.
Two doubles teams made it through to the semi-finals today. Top seeds Oliver Marach of Austria and Aisam-Ul-Haq of Pakistan defeated Brit Jamie Murray and Andre Sa of Brazil 6-4 2-6 10-7. Murray and Sa will take on the Italian duo of Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini.
Aussie Paul Hanley and Belgian Dick Norman won in straight sets against Dutch team Rogier Wassen and Robin Haase to advance to the semis.
Second seeds Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram won their opening round today against Scandinavian team Johan Brunstrom of Sweden and Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-3 6-2. The Israeli team now face Germany’s Michael Kohlmann and Alexander Waske in the quarterfinals.
