The ATP World Tour 500 event China Open in Beijing will kick off with the singles qualifying event on Saturday October 1. The tournament is held at the Beijing Olympic Green Tennis Centre. The tennis centre was purposely built for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The event has attracted many top players this year. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will be back in China trying to win his third consecutive China Open title. Last year the Serbian defeated Spaniard David Ferrer in the final in straight sets.

World No. 9 Gael Monfils is looking to win his first title of the season this week. The Frenchman had a great lead up to the US Open finishing runner up in Washington (l.Stepanek). In Montreal and Cincinnati Monfils reached the quarterfinals in both events before losing second round of the US Open to Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain.

American powerhouse Andy Roddick won China Open in 2008. With a career total of 30 tournament wins he is hoping to collect his second title this year at the China Open.

Last week’s Metz winner Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is keen on winning matches so he can qualify for the Barclays World Tour finals in London. The World No. 7 is currently No. 7 in the battle for London. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer are the four players already qualified for the finals event in London.

The qualifying event will be a very tough one with players like Tommy Robredo of Spain, Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria and Turkey’s number one player Marsel Illhan.

The event has resigned Beijing Benz as the presenting sponsor for the fifth consecutive year. This year’s winner of the singles at the China Open will receive a cheque for just over $500 000.
