World No. 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advanced into the Moselle Open final today when he overcame Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov in straight sets 6-4 6-4.
The top seed is looking to win his first title since 2009 when he won in Tokyo. This year the 26-year-old has been the runner up at Queen’s Club and in Rotterdam. In today’s match he won 75 per cent of his service points. “I am very happy today because I took revenge on a player who beat me twice, because I’m earning points towards the London finals and because I am in the final here.”
The Frenchman is currently in the seventh place in the race to gain a spot at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. “It would be great to earn the title here in Metz, as it would be like the cherry on the cake,” Tsonga said.
Tsonga will face former top ten player Ivan Ljubicic in the final. The Croat defeated in-form Gilles Muller of Luxembourg in two tiebreak sets in today’s semi-final. “I served extremely well, it feels great to have my serve back. Today I think my concentration was very important but also experience and luck played a part, especially in the first set tiebreak,” the 2005 Metz Champion said.
There were no service breaks in today’s match between Ljubicic and Muller. Muller hit 18 aces and Ljubicic 26 in the match that lasted almost two hours.
Ljubicic’s win/loss record against Tsonga is 3-2. The two players have met twice this year and it’s 1-1. Ljubicic said, “It would be great but it is going to be very tough. He is a great player and he will have all the crowd with him.”
Unseeded team Jamie Murray of Great Britain and Andre Sa of Brazil moved into Metz doubles final today with a win over French wildcards Kenny De Schepper and Arnaud Clement 6-4 6-3. Murray and Sa’s final opponents will be Lukas Dlouhy of Czech Republic and Marcelo Melo of Brazil.
The number two seeds Dlouhy and Melo had a tough match against British duo Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins winning 1-6 6-4 10-6.
