Great tennis at the US Open and the season isn’t over yet folks. We’ve been catching Metz here and there. Saw “Luby” beat a Dutch guy we hadn’t heard of before. Ivan Ljubicic beat Igor Sijsling 6-4,6-3. Sijsling was born and resides in Amsterdam and he is ranked 148 in the world. He turned pro in 2005 and is 6’3″. Not as tall as our Dutch “buddy” Richard Krajicek. I measure all the Dutch guys to Meet the standard of excellence Richard set.
Between the ATP/WTA they have events in METZ,BUCHAREST,GUANGZHOU,SEOUL,TOKYO,KUALA LUMPUR,BANGKOK ….Challengers in Tashkent, Cali,
Trinova, Campinas, Aguascalientes, Madrid, Napoli -2 ? Russia? All the guys in the draw are? I stink at Geography. If I’d known I was going to grow up and “globe-trot” I sure would have paid more attention in school.
Tennis players circle the Globe. So do those of us that follow them. We can’t imagine where the no “futures” events are taking place? We know one. Thomas Shubert and his buddies passed me on their way to Laguna Nigel. Shubert’s still in his rookie year. His first ATP point should be on the ATP system by Monday. Laguna Nigel will be his second pro tourney. He chose the college route. Its funny how that goes. Back in the day everyone went to college. Then the chicks starting going pro in high school. Then the guys.
So many tennis players today rely on taking G.E.D. Exams …I would have been one of them. People forget the Bryan Bros played a year at Stanford. The Mac Bros. Graduated from there … Jimmy Connors played a year at UCLA. Mark Knowles , Allen Fox, David Nainkin , Arthur Ashe all graduated from UCLA….. all from memory. But eclectic none the less……
If you look at the college teams in America today you see them filled with foreign players … Why? They want the college education and experience. Personally I’d go the Donald Young route. Or Max Mirnyi. (College and Law School) Get your education on line while playing. Life is short! Multi task………. current pros that played in college. James Blake,John Isner, Kevin Anderson ,Somdev Devvarman.
Chicks? We know Bethanie Mattek-Sands turned down the Ivy Leagues. Including Harvard. Most tennis players are smart. For real they are “thinkers” …. education comes in all forms ….
By the way where’s Cucamonga?
