CANADA TO PLAY FRANCE IN DAVIS CUP BY BNP PARIBAS

Toronto, September 21, 2011 – The draw for the 2012 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group was held on

Wednesday at the International Tennis Federation AGM in Bangkok, Thailand. The Miele Canadian Davis Cup team

will play a home tie versus France from February 10-12, 2012 in the first round of the World Group.

“France is a very tough team, but we are now amongst the best in the world so every team is going to be tough and

we think we are tough too,” said Canada’s captain Martin Laurendeau. “We earned our way here and we are going to

prepare over the next few months to prove that we belong. We are so excited to finally have a home tie after being

on the road all year. It will be really nice to have our home fans behind us and we are really looking forward to

February.”

France is the seeded team with a Davis Cup world ranking of No. 4. They were also the Davis Cup runner-ups in

2010 falling to Serbia in the final. Canada is ranked No. 14 in the world. France holds a 1-0 advantage over Canada

with the only meeting between the two teams being a 5-0 French victory in 1966. Since there is no history between

the teams from after 1970, the choice of ground was decided by lot. Tennis Canada will determine the location and

venue for the tie at a later date.

To reach the World Group, Canada was victorious at three road ties this year against Mexico (4-1), Ecuador (3-2)

and most recently Israel (3-2) in last weekend’s World Group play-off.

The winner of this tie in February will move on to the World Group quarter-finals and will also be assured of their spot

in the World Group for the following year. The losing nation will be forced to play a World Group play-off tie to keep

their spot in the elite level for 2013. The last time Canada was in the World Group was 2004 when they fell to the

Netherlands 4-1 in the first round.

Davis Cup by BNP Paribas is the largest annual international team competition in sport with more than 130 nations

competing. Only 16 countries entered in Davis Cup competition qualify for the World Group each year.

compétitions de la Coupe Davis par BNP Paribas de 2012 dans le cadre de l’AGA, à Bangkok, en Thaïlande. Au

premier tour, l’équipe canadienne Miele de la Coupe Davis recevra la France du 10 au 12 février 2012.

« La France est une adversaire de taille, mais comme nous faisons partie de l’élite mondiale, chaque équipe est

redoutable et nous croyons que nous le sommes aussi », déclarait le capitaine Martin Laurendeau. « Nous avons

mérité notre promotion et, au cours des prochains mois, nous allons bien nous préparer afin de prouver que nous

avons notre place au sein de ce groupe. Après avoir évolué sur la route toute l’année, nous sommes tellement

heureux de pouvoir enfin jouer à la maison. Ce sera extraordinaire de profiter de l’appui de nos partisans et nous

avons très hâte au mois de février. »

En vertu de son quatrième rang mondial, la France est l’une des têtes de série de la Coupe Davis. En 2010, elle

avait atteint la finale avant de s’incliner face à la Serbie. Quant au Canada, il occupe le 14e rang mondial. Les deux

nations s’affronteront pour la deuxième fois de l’histoire de la Coupe Davis, la France ayant remporté l’unique

rencontre 5-0, en 1966. Comme il n’y a eu aucun duel entre les deux pays depuis 1970, c’est un tirage au sort qui a

déterminé le pays hôte. Tennis Canada annoncera plus tard le site de la rencontre.

Pour accéder au Groupe mondial, le Canada a dû remporter trois rencontres à l’étranger, signant des gains aux

dépens du Mexique (4-1), de l’Équateur (3-2) et d’Israël (3-2) lors des affrontements de qualification pour le Groupe

mondial du week-end dernier.

Les gagnants de la rencontre de février accéderont aux quarts de finale du Groupe mondial et seront assurés de

conserver leur place au sein de ce groupe élite pour 2013, tandis que les perdants devront prendre part à une

rencontre de barrage pour rester dans le Groupe mondial. La dernière participation du Canada au Groupe mondial

remonte à 2004 alors qu’il avait subi une défaite de 4-1 contre les Pays-Bas au premier tour.

La Coupe Davis par BNP Paribas est la plus importante compétition internationale par équipe et met en vedette

plus de 130 pays. Seuls 16 d’entre eux se qualifient annuellement pour le Groupe mondial.
