World No. 3 Roger Federer survived his Davis Cup challenge earlier today when he defeated rising Australian star Bernard Tomic 6-2 7-5 3-6 6-3 to level the Davis Cup World Group Playoffs in Sydney.
Federer has just returned from US Open where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the semi-final despite having match points. He arrived in Sydney on Wednesday, which left him two days to practice before the tie commenced on Friday. He ended up beating Lleyton Hewitt for the first time in a Davis Cup match on Friday.
Federer partnered team mate Stanislas Wawrinka in yesterday’s doubles rubber where they suffered a surprise loss to Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione. The Australians took a 2-1 after the doubles win.
Today the Swiss tennis supreme came out firing and won the first set in 34 minutes 6-2. The young Aussie took a 3-0 lead in the second set but Federer used his overdrive to come back and win the set 7-5.
Bernard Tomic took the third set off Federer after an early break. The fourth set consisted of a few breaks but again it was the more experienced Swiss number one who took the match and levelled the tie 2-2.
Many hoped and thought Berard Tomic would cause Federer a lot of problems in today’s match. Even Federer himself praised the youngster after the match, “Bernie did a good job making it difficult for me. He is very good for his young age. He’s at an age where you improve almost by the day.”
The deciding match will be between Swiss No. 2 player Stanislas Wawrinka and Australia’s No. 2 Lleyton Hewitt.
