US Open Champions Melzer and Petzschner qualify for World Tour Finals in London

US Open Champions Austrian Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner of Germany have qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour finals in London at the end of the year due to their recent Grand Slam win.

The Austrian-German team overcame the Polish team of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 6-2 6-2 in the final at Flushing Meadow.

Jurgen Melzer is currently World No. 9 in doubles and World No. 21 in singles. This is the team’s second Grand Slam title. They won Wimbledon last year. The Austrian holds 12 career doubles titles and three of them came in 2011. Petzchner and Melzer won Rotterdam and Stuttgart this year.

Philipp Petzschner is ranked No. 66 in singles and No. 10 in doubles. The German has won five career doubles titles all of them with Melzer. He also won a singles title in Vienna in 2008.

Melzer – Petzschner are currently ranked No. 5 on the 2011 ATP Doubles Team Ranking. Ranked just one place ahead of them at No. 4 are the Indian duo Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes.

Bob and Mike Bryan are still the No. 1 doubles team despite their disaster at the US Open when they lost in the first round to Ivo Karlovic of Croatia and Frank Moser of Germany.

Other teams to qualify for this year prestigious event are Bob and Mike Bryan, Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic and Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor.

The top eight doubles team will play a minimum of three round robin matches. The two top teams of each group will move into the semi-finals.

The event will be held at The O2 Arena in London. It will commence on November 20 and finish on November 27.
