Swiss superstar Roger Federer announced on Facebook this morning his arrival in Sydney Australia. “I just landed in Sydney, Australia. Looking forward to helping Switzerland get back into the Davis Cup world group!”

Australia is hosting Switzerland in the World Group playoffs at the Royal Sydney Golf Club this week starting on Friday. Australia is yet to lose to Switzerland. The last time they played was in 2006.

The Aussies took out China 3-1 to gain a spot in the World Group playoffs. Marinko Matosevic lost to Di Wu in five sets in the opening rubber. Rising star Bernard Tomic won his singles match against Ze Zhang and levelled the tie 1-1. Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione won the doubles over Mao-Xin Gong and Zhe Li. The tie was played in Beijing, China. Lleyton Hewitt came out on the third day and had a close match with Ze Zhang but he sealed the tie for Australia in four sets.

Switzerland has the advantage to have Roger Federer in the team this week. The World No. 3 has played 19 ties and his singles win/loss record is 28/6. Federer played in Switzerland’s last tie, which was at home against Portugal. The Swiss team won 5-0 and Federer played one singles and one doubles rubber.

Another nifty Swiss player is Stanislas Wawrinka the World No. 14. Wawrinka and Federer are a strong singles combination and they will cause a lot of problems for the Australians. Stephane Bohli and Marco Chiudinelli are also representing Switzerland this week. Bohli is ranked 196 and Chiudinelli is at 217.

Apart from former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt the Australians will turn up with Bernard Tomic, Marinko Matosevic and Chris Guccione. Hewitt has been suffering with a foot injury this year but the Aussies remain hopeful he will be able to play. The former Wimbledon Champion has played in 30 ties since his debut in 1999. His amazing singles win/loss record stands at 37/9.

Australia have won Davis Cup 28 times and the last time was in 2003. Former professional tennis player and US Open Champion Pat Rafter will lead the Australian team this weekend.
