The US Open juniors came to a close at the weekend with Oliver Golding (GBR) picking up the boys’ title and Grace Min (USA) victorious in the girls’ event.
Golding claimed victory in an exciting three-set final against top seed Jiri Vesely (CZE) 57 63 64 to win his first junior Grand Slam title. Despite falling at the final stage, world No. 1 Vesely will take heart from having already won a Grand Slam title of his own at the Australian Open earlier in the year.
Golding’s victory capped off a fine week for the British contingent, with fellow countrymen Kyle Edmund and George Morgan also making the semifinal stage.
American Grace Min pulled off an upset to win the girls’ title on home soil, defeating Caroline Garcia (FRA) 75 76 in the final. The unseeded 17-year-old managed to go the whole week without dropping a set.
It was a good week for Garcia, though, who made her first Grand Slam final after falling at the semifinal hurdle in the three other majors this year. Another unseeded American, Nicole Gibbs, made the semifinal losing out to Min in straight sets.
Robin Kern and Julian Lenz (GER) won the boys’ doubles claiming victory over Maxim Dubarenko (MDA) and Vladyslav Manafov (UKR) 75 64. Dubarenko and Manafov were part of the ITF/Grand Slam 18 & Under Touring Team to North America.
In the girls’ doubles, Irina Khromacheva (RUS) and Demi Schuurs (NED) won the title. In a close encounter against Americans Gabrielle Faith Andrews and Taylor Townsend, theEuropeanpairingedgedvictory645710-5.
